A Mutari simulation workshop is typically run over a half day, but can be extended to a full day if an optional exercise in applying the methodology to a real case is included.
What is the role, mission and success measures in the Mutari simulation?
You play the role of an Integration Manager, who, in the context of a merger between two banks, has been asked to figure out the post-merger integration plan, by working with a number of internal and external stakeholders in the project. Success is measured by the level of expected earnings, which depends on both the financial projections and the level of support obtained from the stakeholder group as a whole.
What are the limits on numbers of participants in a Mutari simulation workshop?
We recommend that participants be organised in teams of 3 to 5 people, with a minimum of 3 teams and a maximum of 40 teams.
Mutari simulation: case studies
A few examples of how Mutari is used, all over the world (both in classroom and in remote workshop formats), by a variety of clients, in number of different contexts and for a wide range of participant experience levels and backgrounds.
At one of France’s leading business schools, Mutari has been used by executives from an oil major in three cohorts per year since 2015. It is run in both onsite and remote formats, for up to 75 participants at a time. Participants are from all over the world, and work together in teams to develop their stakeholder management skills, as part of a program designed to prepare them for senior leadership roles.
In one of the world’s leading online MBA programs, offered by a public university in the USA, Mutari has been used since 2014 in a module about leading change, with cohorts of 15-20 students doing the simulation asynchronously in virtual teams, followed by a facilitated debrief. The simulation gives students an intense experience of influencing without authority, the information dynamics and politics of organisational transformations, and ultimately what drives or destroys the value of the planned change.
In a program run by Prendo in a remote format, the participants are executives from a large European construction and consulting company that regularly acquires small specialist companies as an explicit part of its ongoing growth strategy. The focus of the Mutari simulation workshop is to improve participants’ skills in the crucial phase of post-merger integration, when carefully laid plans e.g. for how IT systems and accounting processes are to be connected fail to be realised due to poor change leadership.
Delivered by one of Prendo’s global partners, Mutari is used in a leadership program for senior government officials working in a Middle Eastern country’s finance ministry. The simulation gives participants a chance to apply relevant leadership frameworks and capabilities, including: dealing with complexity, managing relationships, adapting to change, and finding creative solutions.
